It must be almost every author’s dream to have their book made into a movie or television series. I’m no different, because when I recently received an email from a Hollywood production company asking if the film/TV rights were available for my book, Confessions of a Middle-Aged Runaway, I couldn’t help feeling excited.
And skeptical. There are so many scams running around out there. So I did my homework before responding. I googled the company to make sure they were legitimate, checked out both the names mentioned in the email to see if they had LinkedIn profiles with the company, and looked to see if the email address format matched what was in LinkedIn. I even researched their phone numbers. Check, check, and check.
When I responded that the film/TV rights were indeed available, I asked how they found my book. I was told an actress was looking for an intellectual property, but they didn’t tell me who. They asked if I could send them a PDF copy of my book for their internal review. I happily sent them a copy.
They told me their internal review should be completed in about a month. A month has now passed without a peep. I’m trying to hold out hope that this still might happen, but I have received no reply to the email I sent a couple of days ago. My spirits are flagging. Am I being ghosted? Is it possible that my book could still be seen on the big screen some day? Only time will tell. But in the meantime, keep your fingers crossed for me. I could use your positive thoughts.
Oh, how exciting, Heidi! I’m just reading the book of Dan Miller

Thanks for the comment, Chris! Which Dan Miller book are you reading, is it 48 Days to the Work You Love?

Hi, Heidi,
I meant Don(ald) Miller. The full title of the book is “A million miles in a thousand years.” Really like it!
A hug.

Just see my message had been cut off. The book is about Don’s journey to get his memoires turned into a movie. 😉 We keep our fingers crossed that in your case those guys from Hollywood don’t miss out on a great opportunity and a wonderful human!

It’s entirely possible that the Hollywood strike is delaying everything.
Best of luck to you.

Thanks, Yvonne! The strike could definitely affect things, and I know everything moves slowly in Hollywood, anyway. Patience is not my strong point!

Ps I tried to post this directly in your blog but without a WordPress account it wouldn’t let me.

Thanks, Caryn! I’m not sure why you were unable to post a comment without a WordPress account. Others without WordPress accounts are able to post comments, including my husband. But WordPress can definitely be wonky sometimes. Thanks again for the comment!

I hope it’s legit. Coincidentally, I read a recent article on Writers Beware:

Thanks, Ginny. I have seen emails like the ones in your article that other authors have received, and they are clearly scams. They don’t have legitimate company email addresses, and they ask you to submit screenplays or other materials that cost money to create. The emails I received weren’t anything like that. They didn’t ask for money or for me to submit a treatment, or screenplay, or hire others to do things to make my book eligible for something. They also didn’t flatter me like most of those scam emails do. They were simply inquiring whether the film/TV rights were available. I know the odds are against my book being made into a movie, but I still would appreciate positive thoughts–anything is possible!
