Downtown Book & Sound, Salinas, CA
What’s better than a book signing event? Two book signing events! I’ll be signing copies of my book, Confessions of a Middle-Aged Runaway: An RV Travel Adventure, in two northern California cities this week.
On Sunday, September 15th from 10 to 2 I’ll be in a booth at the Martinez Farmer’s Market on Main Street. It’s a lot of fun talking to people, so stop by if you’re in the neighborhood.
On Friday, September 20th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. I’ll be doing a talk and signing books at Downtown Book & Sound in Salinas. They are located at 213 Main Street. It’s going to be a super fun event with appetizers and live music, and it’s a really cool store!
Glad to hear you are getting around.

Hello Heidi,
I hope the book signing went well today and that it will also go well next week. I plan to contact my locals bookshops to organize signings and my local libraries to organize readings. Do you have any advice for book signings? My book is about living in Scotland for two years, so I thought I’d set up a table with the two Scottish flags (just little ones on sticks) and have some Walker’s Biscuits on hand to lure people to the table. What kinds of things have you tried to get people to at least talk to you or buy your book?

Hi Sarah,
Thanks for your comment and good wishes! It went well at the farmer’s market today. Sold a good number of books and had fun talking to people. What is the name of your book? It sounds interesting.
My advice for signings is to promote it everywhere you can: mailing list, social media, website/blog, newsletter, etc. If you can get the local paper to post it in their events section, that’s a big help. I have also done press releases for some of my events. I have candy and toy compasses to attract people to the table (the compass has significance for my book), and then I smile, try to make eye contact with anyone I can, greet them and ask if they would like a chocolate. I always stand instead of sit.
I have my book cover image printed on a large (16X24) foam board with an easel back that I put on the table. I also have bookmarks with my book cover and blurb as well as business cards, and ask them if they would like a bookmark.
I hope this helps, and best of luck with the signings and readings! Let me know how they turn out.
