Railroad Flyer Snip

I’m so grateful for the independent bookstores, and all bookstores, since so many of them have been disappearing over recent years. I love the way walking into a bookstore is a feast for my senses. My eyes widen at the kaleidoscope of colors on the covers and spines of the books stacked on tables and lined up smartly on the shelves as I’m drawn in. There is a moment of hesitation because I’m not sure in which direction I should go first.

Gently picking up the books that catch my eye one-by-one, I’m careful not to bend the corners or crease the pages as I read first the back cover and then the first paragraph or pages. Sometimes I can hear the voices of the characters as I read, although the sounds may change as I get to know them better. I run my fingers over the jacket or cover, and then the pages, noticing the smooth silky feeling of some paper, and the rustic roughness of others, and how they feel on my fingertips as I turn the pages. I bring the book up close to my face and breathe deeply the comforting scent of ink and paper. I feel thirsty, wanting to drink in all of those books, but instead I settle on buying one or two. For now.

Hope you can join me in enjoying Railroad Book Depot in Pittsburg, CA on Saturday, June 15th at 1:00 p.m. where I’ll do a talk, short reading, and book signing of my book, Confessions of a Middle-Aged Runaway: An RV Travel Adventure.

  1. This posting is a wonderful description of what bookstores are like for real book lovers. It’s a sensual experience for sure – there’s something uniquely special about holding a book, turning its pages, smelling the ink and paper, and being pulled in by the story, characters, and descriptions. It’s really exciting you’re having a book signing at Railroad Book Depot. Congratulations! I’ll be there!
